Montepulciano is a medieval hill town in Tuscany, Italy. Surrounded by vineyards, it is known for its red wine, Vino Nobile. The Tower of Pulcinella is a clock tower surmounted by the figure of Pulcinella, a character in the commedia dell'arte. In Piazza Grande is the 14th-century Palazzo Comunale, with a tower offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside
Monticchiello, a hamlet of Pienza, is a charming medieval village overlooking the Val d’Orcia. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when it was fortified to control the roads between Siena and Montepulciano. Still today it preserves stone walls, towers and alleys, as well as the church of Saints Leonardo and Cristoforo. The village is also known for its Teatro Povero, born from the tradition of the local community.
The Temple of San Biagio, just outside Montepulciano, is one of the masterpieces of the Tuscan Renaissance. Built between 1518 and 1545 to a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, it has a Greek cross plan and an elegant travertine facade. Nestled among cypresses and hills, it was built on the site of an ancient parish church and still retains a solemn and harmonious atmosphere.
