Today, explore the Central Plateau Conservation Area, a wild landscape of sub-alpine moorlands, glacial tarns, and windswept ridges. Choose from guided or self-guided walks to places like Allisons Hut, Lake Ada, or Ibbott’s Hut. Learn about the region’s glacial history and spot native wildlife such as wombats, quolls, wallabies, and Tasmanian devils, along with abundant birdlife. After a day of discovery, enjoy a hearty lodge meal and stargaze under Tasmania’s Dark Sky Reserve—perhaps even glimpsing the Southern Lights.
Today we’ll explore more of this rugged alpine landscape. Walk to a remote hut, follow glacier-carved lakeshores, or simply soak in the stillness. With shifting light and weather, it’s perfect for photography and quiet reflection. Wildlife sightings are possible, especially in the calm of morning or evening. The lodge offers a cosy retreat with warm lounges, local wines, and hearty meals. After dinner, step outside to savour the pristine night sky and peaceful solitude.
On your final morning, consider taking an early stroll to search for a platypus before breakfast. After checking out, we make our way back towards Hobart, stopping at The Steppes—a heritage site that reflects the region’s high-country sheep grazing past and features a sculpture trail and interpretive displays. As we descend from the plateau, the expansive alpine landscape gives way to fertile lowlands. We arrive back in Hobart by approximately 1:00pm, with drop-off available at city hotels or direct transfer to the airport if needed.
