This temple is known as one of the oldest temples in Kyoto built as a villa of an aristocrat in the 9th century.

This area is designated as one of 4 town preservation areas in Kyoto. It used to be called Atago highway, an old highway leading to Mt. Atago which enshrines the god of fire prevention in Shintoism.
