Cataratas do Iguaçu is a set of approximately 275 waterfalls on the Iguaçu River, located between Iguaçu National Park, Paraná, Brazil, and Iguazú National Park in Misiones, Argentina, on the border between the two countries. The total area of both national parks covers 250,000 hectares of subtropical forest and is considered a World Natural Heritage Site. The Argentine national park was established in 1934, while the Brazilian park was inaugurated in 1939. Both protected areas aim to manage and preserve the water source represented by these falls and the surrounding environment. Both parks were designated World Heritage Sites in 1984 and 1986, respectively. Since 2002, Iguaçu National Park has been one of Brazil's geological sites.
