Essaouira, or what was known as Mogador city, is a Portuguese colony since the Middle Ages, built by the Portuguese and rebuilt by the French during the era of the French protectorate and then the Kingdom of Morocco during independence. Essaouira is characterized by many high walls and huge doors, half of which are European and the other of an authentic Moroccan character. The city of Essaouira includes a group of castles and forts that have remained intact since that time. It is also known as the City of Winds for its coastal location.
