It is a real 6 hours jungle trek, a wonderful experience. It's like being in a David Attenburough film. Funny lemurs and chameleons, exotic plants, like Jackfruit, cocoa, lychee, pepper and coffee bushes, vanilla and a lot more.
It's not a simple walk on a paved nature trail, so for prepared travellers only.
After reaching the island peak, in the second half of the trek we meet more and more lemurs, who are very friendly in winter, even jumping on us gently and accepting bananas from our hands, to eat sitting on our shoulders or heads. It's a real jungle adventure!
You'll encounter real jungle villages with friendly indigenous people and such flora and fauna that you have only seen in nature films.
During the tour you can taste things like the fresh cocoa fruit (the flesh of cocoa), the sweetness of raw sugar cane, jackfruit or soursop, 8 kinds of mango in season and other special fruits that don't even have a name in English or French!
Try it and you will never forget nor regret it!
We can pick you up anywhere in Nosy Be also other than the hotels on this list. Fossa Travel also has special permition to pick up the guests directly in the port deck when a cruiser ship arrives. Whether we pick you up from your hotel or bungalow, or you come to our office, the departure is always from our office in the main square of Hell-Ville. There we will take whatever you may need (e.g. snorkel equipment and tanks, sunscreen, hammock, etc.) and host you for a Malagasy tea, coffee or refreshment juice before departure while explaining the day's programme.
Nosy Komba is a volcanic island covered with dense jungle, 20 minutes boat ride from Nosy Be. We land on the south-west side of the island, in Anjiabe village. Face the jungle and start our 6 hours tour. And the real fun starts here! Within the first half hour you'll meet lots of special plants. Mangoes, cocoa, soursop, bread and jackfruit trees, pepper bushes, bananas, cola nuts, pineapples, wild chillies and lots of vanilla. And best of all, we will taste all of them! Our destination is reaching the summit of Komba at 622 meters. In the dense sultry jungle it is not an average forest walk. But it's well worth it, because along we come across tiny jungle villages, where we meet the natives and see how they still live together with nature. You can only see this in Attenborough films! Reaching the top the clearing has a fantastic view of the surrounding archipelago. Here we rest, enjoy refreshments, fruits and raw sugar cane to re-energise for the 2 hour descent on the other side.
Our mountain hike on the north-eastern side of Nosy Komba ends at the Black Lemur Sanctuary, at the edge of Ampangorina village. As we approach the Lemur Sanctuary, we will encounter more and more amusing lemurs in the last hour and a half of our trek, in the company of numerous chameleons, geckos, giant tortoises, snakes and many more. In winter time the Lemurs are extremely friendly but never aggressive. They jump on us gently and eat bananas out of our hands, but they never steal or bite. We will walk through the park, admire the wildlife then through the jungle walkway to the village to see and buy artwork by local artists. Ebony, rosewood, mangrove sculptures, folk art tablecloths, clothes, paintings... Arriving in Ampangorina village, you can choose to taste our partner's fantastic food in a real, traditional Malagasy restaurant in the centre of the village, or you can choose to eat at our local partner's exclusive restaurant on the cliffs with a fabulous view of the ocean.
