It is the place where, according to tradition, the ninth canto of Homer's Odyssey is set, in which Ulysses clashes with Polyphemus, blinding him after getting him drunk. In doing so he manages to escape from the cave where he had been trapped with his companions. The Cyclops, blind and angry, hurls enormous boulders at the ships of the fleeing Greeks which, according to tradition, became the Islands of the Cyclops.
