Begin your exploration in the historic district of Sanmachi Suji, where Takayama’s old town streets are lined with traditional wooden merchant houses dating back to the Edo period. Wander past beautifully crafted lattice windows, charming irrigation canals flowing along the streets, and centuries-old shops displaying noren curtains beneath their eaves.
You’ll also notice distinctive sake breweries, identified by their hanging cedar-leaf balls known as sugidama, which signal freshly brewed sake. The nostalgic atmosphere and preserved architecture make Takayama’s old town one of the most authentic historic districts in Japan.
