Mikumi is one of the most accessible Tanzanian parks from Dar es Salaam, making it an ideal destination for short or weekend safaris without the need for long flights to northern parks like the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. The park boasts abundant wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest, as well as primates such as baboons and vervet monkeys. With over 400 recorded bird species, it is also a paradise for birdwatchers. Unlike the busier northern parks, Mikumi offers a tranquil and authentic safari experience, allowing visitors to enjoy wildlife viewing in a more intimate and relaxed setting without large tour groups or crowded trails. Despite its relatively small size, the park’s rich biodiversity ensures ample wildlife encounters, even on shorter safaris.

On your drive from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park, you’ll enjoy views of the city and experience the scenic coastal landscapes along the way to Mikumi.

2Mikumi National Park
Meet and greet your guide at your accommodation, then depart early from Dar es Salaam to avoid traffic as you begin your safari to Mikumi National Park (approximately 6–7 hours by road). Alternatively, you can board the SGR train at 6:00 AM in Dar es Salaam and arrive in Morogoro at around 7:30 AM, where your guide will meet you and transfer you to Mikumi National Park. As you approach the park, begin your guided game drive across the open plains and savannah. Enjoy searching for Africa’s large mammals and primates while creating unforgettable memories as you explore the diverse wildlife of Mikumi.

3Mikumi National Park
Choose either full day game drive or half day game drive in the open savannahs which is surrounded by mountains making for great vistas and dramatic skies. Another day filled with unexpected encounters, magnificent views and new impressions. With your camera at your fingertips, you continue to explore Mikumi’s fascinating nature and wildlife—every turn is unique, every moment an opportunity.

4Mikumi National Park
After breakfast, pick up your packed lunch, and your guide will drive you to a Maasai boma (optional) to explore and experience their traditional way of life. Following this visit, you will return by road or we will book SGR to Dar es Salaam.
