A roofline so extravagant, so impossibly fantastical, that when you first see it rising from the forest you genuinely cannot believe it is real. It is said that Chambord inspired the enchanted castle in Beauty and the Beast - and standing before it, that feels entirely plausible. At its heart is one of the great architectural mysteries of the Renaissance - the legendary double-helix staircase, two spirals intertwined so that two people can ascend and descend simultaneously without ever meeting. Its design is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, who sketched similar structures in his notebooks. Francis I built Chambord ostensibly as a hunting lodge. Whatever it is, it is one of the most extraordinary buildings on earth.
