09:00 AM | Departure from Tours Your guide will meet you at your hotel for a morning of royal châteaux, royal intrigue and celebrated wines along the Loire Valley. 09:20 AM - 11:00 AM | Château de Chenonceau Two women. One château. The most spectacular rivalry in French history. Diane de Poitiers - the king's favourite, twenty years his senior, impossibly elegant - received Chenonceau as a gift from Henri II and transformed it into her personal paradise. When the king died, his furious widow Catherine de Medici wasted no time: she seized the château, banished Diane to a lesser estate and proceeded to outdo her rival in every possible way - adding the iconic bridge across the Cher, the grand gallery, the gardens. The result of this magnificent obsession? The most visited private monument in France and a château unlike any other in the world.
11:20 AM - 01:00 PM | Château d'Amboise Before Versailles, before the Louvre became a palace - there was Amboise. For over a century this was the beating heart of French royal power, the cradle where kings were born, raised and crowned. Charles VIII, Louis XII, Francis I - the greatest names of the French Renaissance all called Amboise home. And it was here that Francis I invited the ageing Leonardo da Vinci to spend his final years, installing the genius in the neighbouring Clos Lucé. 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM | Lunch Break in Amboise Explore the charming cobbled streets of this historic town and enjoy a relaxed lunch at a local restaurant. 02:00 PM - 02:45 PM | Wine Tasting Discover the celebrated wines of the Loire Valley - crisp Vouvray, elegant Sancerre, earthy Chinon - at a local family-run domaine. Your sommelier will guide you through the region's most distinctive appellations.
03:00 PM - 04:45 PM | Château de Chambord 440 rooms. 365 fireplaces. A roofline so extravagant, so impossibly fantastical, that when you first see it rising from the forest you genuinely cannot believe it is real. It is said that Chambord inspired the enchanted castle in Beauty and the Beast - and standing before it, that feels entirely plausible. At its heart is one of the great architectural mysteries of the Renaissance - the legendary double-helix staircase, two spirals intertwined so that two people can ascend and descend simultaneously without ever meeting. Its design is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, who sketched similar structures in his notebooks. Francis I built Chambord ostensibly as a hunting lodge. Whatever it is, it is one of the most extraordinary buildings on earth.
