Depart from anywhere in the Greater Lisbon area on this no-rush tour. The tour departs directly for picturesque Óbidos. Expect a short, comfortable highway trip of around 60 minutes. You will travel all day through Western Portugal, always in the breeze of the Atlantic coast.
With Lisbon behind us, suddenly a rocky hill topped with a castle rises on the horizon - it's Óbidos. A land of historical importance and heritage, of beauty and authenticity. A land with a past prior to the very foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal. And curiously, the land offered as a marriage dowry to several of those who became queens of Portugal.
One of the town's main attractions is its medieval castle, which dates back to the 12th century. Also dating from the 12th century, you'll discover the church of Santa Maria, located in Óbidos' main square, with beautiful Manueline and Gothic architecture. Inside, you can admire the ornate decorations and historic works of art. The entire medieval town is surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls, offering excellent views of the surrounding countryside. You can take a pleasant stroll along the ramparts and admire the landscape. The town's narrow, cobbled streets are lined with charming whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowers, creating a picturesque setting that is perfect for exploring on foot. The town is also known for its craft stores selling local handicrafts, ceramics and souvenirs. Here it will be hard to resist grabbing a souvenir.
(TASTING) Of course... you won't want to miss the opportunity to taste Óbidos' famous liqueur, Ginjinha, made from sour cherries and served in chocolate cups. Just enjoy it. It's on us.
Alcobaça town follows. There we will take a guided and very easy walk through the beautiful historic center that besides all the heritage and authenticity is also the place of the union of two rivers that originated the name of the town. Just imagine that this rivers union hidden spot is called the Garden of Love. Curious to know more?
As we walk through the historic center you will love snapping pictures of the tiny bridges and the local houses that emerge from the banks and border the rivers. A few steps further you'll come across the 12th century Royal Abbey and the Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO heritage site. We'll visit the impressive 900-year gothic Abbey where you'll discover two carved stone tombs, probably the most beautiful you've ever seen, and you'll learn about a beautiful yet tragic love story. Definitely a must-see.
(TASTING) To go to Alcobaça and not try traditional and ancient pastries would be a serious sin. Why you'll taste the sweet "cornucópias", a typical and award-winning pastry. Just enjoy it. It's on us.
(OPTIONAL) If you feel like it, you may visit to the Monastery of Alcoabaça, a UNESCO heritage site.
(OPTIONAL) It's lunchtime. Although it is not included in the tour program, we have set aside time in the program for it. We'll take care of these details once you've booked the tour.
Head now for picturesque and seaside Nazaré. You'll stroll at the promontory, known as Sitio, where a good handful of must-see attractions await you within walking distance. Just to mention a few, you'll visit the stunning 110-meters-high Suberco viewpoint, the curious Chapel of the Miracle's Memory and it's cave, and the 14th century Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazareth, the first sanctuary in Portugal, where you'll discover something curious.
(Entrance ticket is included) If you feel like it, we can walk to the 16th century Fort and nowadays Surf Museum, built on top of the cliff and overlooking the Nazaré Canyon, where the legendary Giant Waves, 30-meter (100-foot) high waves, take place. Actually the biggest surfable waves in the world. Did you know the Guinness world record for the largest wave ever surfed has been broken here several times and is currently set at 26.21 meters (85.99 ft)?
You also won't want to miss Nazaré's golden sandy beach, where you'll learn about local traditions. You'll enjoy meeting the Varinas, the local women dressed in their seven colorful skirts. By the way... They can be a bit cheeky sometimes!
We continue along the coastline to the amazing shell-shaped bay of São Martinho do Porto and head down to the harbor to discover a fossilized curiosity millions of years old. Here is the spot where you may feel like sampling some fresh seafood and sparkling wine by the sea.
(OPTIONAL) With the sea always in sight, the trip continues to make one last stop, hopefully at sunset, at the beautiful Foz do Arelho beach, to enjoy the scenery, relax and even put your feet up on the sand while having a drink or an ice cream right on the beach.
After relaxation, we set off towards Lisbon along the edge of Óbidos Lagoon, where you'll see typical fishing boats, local shellfish gatherers and, eventually, colonies of flamingos. It's a very beautiful route to end our journey and it'll be hard not to ask to stop the car to take the last photos.
Back to the Lisbon area. The journey takes between 10 and 12 hours, depending on the optional visits you make and whether you decide to have lunch on site. As a matter of transparency, we would like to inform you that in addition to the added time of 5 hours given to the attractions listed in the itinerary, the remaining 6 to 8 hours announced refer to: 6 hours for the total travel time, and the other 2 hours for the total time of the moments listed as optional. By the way... we'd like you to know that by choosing us you're choosing a free tour for children under 11 and a 100% sustainable car trip, as all GHG emissions generated are fully offset. Remark: The sighting of the world's biggest surfable waves, over 30 meters high (+100 ft), can be enjoyed mainly between November and March. This event, although frequent during this period, is always subject to favorable weather conditions, so giant waves sightings cannot be guaranteed.
