One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city and likely also the most vibrant one, Ribeira district is a stop along the tour full of restaurants, cafes, artisan shops and street performers. Throughout history, the district has had a significant role in the maritime industry of Porto. However, the now lively and bustling neighborhood has had its hardships over the years, including wars, economic recessions and political unrest. None of this is visible in the Ribeira of today, but the place has some interesting stories left to tell.
After Porto´s first Commercial House closed, local merchants found themselves trading under the open sky. After the remains of a burned down monastery were donated to the merchants, they renovated and turned it into their own trading palace. Nowadays, the palace no longer functions as a stock exchange and is open for the public to enjoy its magnificence. Right across the street from the palace, is the statue of Henry the Navigator, also known as Infante Dom Henrique in Portuguese. This member of the Portuguese royal family has influenced many of his country´s exploration voyages and caused Portugal to be one of the leading maritime nations of its time.
This building is not just known for the beautiful blue and white azulejo tiles, but rather for the fact that it´s two churches side by side. One was originally built as the church for the sisterhood of the Carmelites and the other was built over a hundred years later. Both churches are open to the public, which offers the opportunity to admire the rich history of the site, as well as the lavish gilded altars and artworks.
What city is complete without a market? The Bolhão Market fulfills this criteria and gives you a glimpse into the authentic Porto. The market was opened in 1839 and has since then been a place to buy fresh vegetables and fruit, meat, cheese, fish and many other things. You can even try your luck with some haggling, for the true experience.
