After a scenic drive from Moshi or Arusha, we arrive at Londorossi Gate for registration with Kilimanjaro National Park. From here, we continue by vehicle to the Lemosho trailhead where your trek begins. The trail winds through lush, tropical rainforest rich in birdlife and monkey sightings, particularly black-and-white colobus monkeys.
We leave the forest behind and ascend steadily into the moorland zone. The trail opens up to panoramic views and crosses streams and ridges as we make your way onto the Shira Plateau—an ancient volcanic caldera. The change in vegetation is dramatic, with giant heathers and unique flora.
A more relaxed day that allows the body to adjust to the altitude. We traverse the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic areas, with views of Mount Meru in the distance. This is also a good time to acclimatize and conserve energy for the days ahead.
We ascend gradually toward Lava Tower, a massive volcanic plug, for an important acclimatization point at 4,630m. After a rest and lunch at Lava Tower, we descend into the scenic Barranco Valley. This day follows the “climb high, sleep low” method, proven to improve acclimatization.
One of the most memorable days on the mountain. After breakfast, we tackle the infamous Barranco Wall, a steep, rock face that requires some light scrambling. Once at the top, you're rewarded with stunning views of the southern glacier. The trail then descends and ascends through valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp.
A short but challenging climb to Barafu Camp, your basecamp before the summit. The trail is dry and exposed, with high winds and thin air. After an early dinner, you’ll rest for the summit push, which begins around midnight.
The toughest but most rewarding day. You’ll begin trekking at midnight, ascending through the freezing arctic zone with headlamps under a sky full of stars. After reaching Stella Point (5,756m), continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and a short rest, descend back to Barafu for a quick break and continue down to Mweka Camp, where the air is thicker and sleep is well earned.
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest, often slippery but beautiful. At Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and say farewell to the mountain crew. A vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel for a well-deserved shower, celebration, and rest.
