    Urquhart Castle

We will drive from Invergordon and visit Urquhart Castle. A historic fortress located on the shore of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It holds a strategic position overlooking Loch Ness, one of Scotland's most famous lochs. The exact origins of Urquhart Castle are uncertain, but it is believed to have been built in the 13th century. The castle played a significant role in the conflicts between the Scottish clans and the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence. It changed hands several times and underwent various modifications and expansions over the centuries. Since then, it has remained in ruins but has become an iconic and popular tourist attraction due to its stunning location and association with the legend of the Loch Ness Monster. The loch itself is known worldwide for the Loch Ness Monster, often referred to as "Nessie," and many visitors come to the area in the hope of catching a glimpse of this elusive creature.

    Clava Cairns

The Clava Cairns, also known as the Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Bulnuaran of Clava, are a group of three well-preserved Bronze Age burial cairns located near Inverness, Scotland. These cairns are estimated to be around 4,000 years old and are known for their distinctive circular structures and alignment with the solstice. The Clava Cairns consist of passage graves, which were burial chambers constructed with large stone slabs and covered with mounds of earth and stones. The cairns were used for communal burials, and they likely held both human remains and grave goods. The precise purpose and rituals associated with these burials are not fully understood, but they provide valuable insights into the prehistoric cultures of the region. It's worth noting that the Clava Cairns have gained some modern-day recognition due to their resemblance to the fictional Craigh na Dun stone circle featured in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the government forces. Visitors can also explore the battlefield itself, which has been preserved as closely as possible to its 18th-century state. There are marked trails and informative panels that guide visitors through key points of the battle, including the positions of the opposing forces and the events that unfolded during the fighting. Beauly Priory

The Priory of Beauly, also known as the Beauly Priory, is a ruined medieval monastery located in the village of Beauly. Over the centuries, the priory underwent several expansions and renovations, resulting in a complex of buildings that included a church, cloister, chapter house, and other monastic structures. However, like many religious institutions in Scotland, the priory faced challenges during the Reformation in the 16th century, when Protestantism gained prominence. It was eventually abandoned and fell into ruin. It is a place where visitors can immerse themselves in Scotland's medieval past and appreciate the architectural and cultural heritage of the region.
