Black lava, or "lahar hitam", from Mount Batur is solidified basaltic lava. Batur is an active volcano in Kintamani, Bali. When it erupts, the lava that comes out is dark gray to black because it’s rich in iron and magnesium but low in silica. Why it looks black, Fast cooling : When lava hits air/ground, it cools quickly. That traps tiny crystals and makes the rock look dark + porous, Low silica : Basaltic lava like Batur’s flows easily and doesn’t trap gas much, so it forms smooth or ropey black rock The black lava fields are everywhere around Lake Batur and the Kintamani area. The most famous flows are from eruptions in 1963 and 1974. Now they look like a black desert with moss and small plants slowly growing on top. Balinese people see the black lava as both destructive and fertile. It destroys land during eruption, but after thousands of years the broken lava weathers into super fertile soil. That’s why Kintamani is famous for oranges + coffee.
