Pidurangala Sunrise/Sunset Guided Climb

2 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

Pidurangala is a Rock Temple with a cave complex. The history goes back to 5th Century BC to King Kashyapa's period (477-195 AD). There are so many ancient ruins in and around the main rock. I will explain to you about the historical background of the Pidurangala Temple which was the main temple at that time.

During the climb we can observe cave dwellings which were used by the Buddhist monks in ancient times to stay. Currently there are few caves with proper walls which are used by meditating monks. I will show you our advanced technology used by the ancient workers to form caves and about tool technology.

What to expect

Pidurangala rock is about 150m in height from surrounding plain. During the climb we can observe cave dwellings which used by the Buddhist monks in ancient times to stay. Currently there are few caves with proper walls which using by meditating monks.

The climb is medium-hard climb with somewhat steep elevation unlike Sigiriya. Most of the pathway consists of proper boulder steps and the final bit we have to climb a few boulders to get to the top.

The view is stunning! This is a 'must visit' attraction if you are in Sigiriya. You can witness a 360 degree view from the top.
