The Tell's Chapel is located directly on the shores of Lake Lucerne. According to legend, this is where the Swiss national hero William Tell escaped from the Habsburg bailiff Gessler in the early 14th century after having to shoot an apple off his son's head with a crossbow. Four large murals in the chapel tell the story. However, a visit is not only worthwhile because of William Tell and the fantastic view over the lake. A few steps up the slope you will also find the largest carillon in Switzerland, which plays various well-known melodies every hour on the hour. Enjoy a 20 min boat ride on the lake of Lucerne with a passenger ship and then walk up the hill to the Rütli. The Rütli is a historically significant mountain meadow in the canton of Uri. According to legend, the alliance of the three original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden (now Obwalden and Nidwalden) was concluded on this meadow with the Rütli Oath. As the "cradle of Switzerland", the approximately six-hectare meadow has the character of a national monument. After about 45 min, you will return by the passenger ship and enjoy a wonderful view over the surrounding mountains and the lake.
Visit the "Tell Monument" which is a memorial to William Tell on the market square in Altdorf, Canton Uri, Switzerland. The bronze statue by sculptor Richard Kissling was inaugurated on August 28, 1895 at the foot of an old tower. It shows the Swiss national hero with his crossbow and accompanied by his son. Take a look at the Memorial at Morgarten and visit the Visitor Center. 2 km north of the battle site with the chapel, Morgarten House and Letzi Tower, the Morgarten Monument has been rising above Lake Aegeri for over a hundred years. On November 15, 1315, a band of Habsburg knights led by Duke Leopold was attacked by local people between the present-day villages of Oberägeri and Sattel and forced to retreat. They suffered considerable losses. This historical event was mystified as the Battle of Morgarten - the Confederates' first battle for freedom of Switzerland.
After this impressive visit of the battlefield and the memorial you will return comfortably in a airconditioned vehicle back to your hotel. The driving time is 60 minutes.
