Morning by the Adriatic, afternoon among the vines: Slovenia’s short stretch of coast rises straight into wine country. We start in Piran, a Venetian town of cobbled lanes and pastel houses packed onto a narrow peninsula. Climb to St. George’s Church for a view over the rooftops to Italy and Croatia, and hear why Piran’s most famous son swore the devil handed him his finest music.
Then we head into the Istrian hills, where vines grow within sight of the sea. At local wineries you’ll taste the region’s signature wines, from deep red Refošk to aromatic Malvazija, and meet the families who make them. For something truly unusual, add a stop at the wine fountain in the hilltop village of Marezige, where local wines pour from taps set into a stone wall and the view runs all the way down to Koper and the sea.
