See the Vipava Valley, Slovenia’s warmest wine country, from above before you taste it glass by glass. We begin with an easy hike to a (not so) secret viewpoint where the whole valley opens up beneath you: vineyards, stone villages huddled around their belfries, and the steep wall of mountains that shelters it all. Only then do we head down to the wine.
Just an hour from Ljubljana, this valley stays green all year, where Mediterranean warmth meets Alpine air and the fierce burja wind sweeps through. That mix gives Vipava wines their freshness and makes it home to native grapes like Zelen and Pinela, found almost nowhere else on earth. At a local family winery overlooking the karst countryside, you’ll taste them with a plate of air-dried pršut, hear how they’re made, and discover why that wind shapes far more here than the vines.

1Otlica Natural Window
The Otlica Natural Window (weather permitting) looming on the steep slopes over Ajdovscina, on the edge of the Trnovo Forest, close to the village of Otlica, ancient forces of nature created a large orifice in the rock – a captivating natural window boasting a scenic view of the Vipava Valley. But don't worry, we make it an easy 20-minute track to it.

2Vipavski Kriz
The scenic hillside town will catch your eye from afar. Perched proudly on a hill near Ajdovscina, Vipavski Kriz used to be a very important town and the center of the valley for centuries. The tiny, picture-book town with an impressive wall is one of the finest monuments of cultural history in the country.

3Rihemberk Castle
Perched on a steep slope overlooking the village of Branik stands Rihemberk Castle, one of the most picturesque castles in the country, and a monument of national importance. The site featured traces of a prehistoric fortress, whereas the castle itself was built in the late 12th century. The impressive Gothic tower dominating over the area was erected in the 13th century.
