Guided by two locals who are so deeply connected to Kurashiki that everyone in the Bikan Historical Quarter area knows them, this tour invites you into the everyday life of the city. Throughout the tour, a licensed interpreter-guide will accompany you to ensure smooth communication and a deeper understanding of the stories behind each place.
Rather than a typical walking tour, you will first learn the story of Kurashiki’s cotton culture—discovering the city from the inside out so you can truly appreciate its essence.
Turn toward the Bikan Historical Quarter at the intersection with the FamilyMart on Kurashiki Chuo-dori Street. Walk about 50 meters, and you will find the building on your left. Please meet your guide in the garden inside the facility.
This café is located on Honmachi Street, which offers easy access to the main promenade along the Kurashiki River. It is a convenient spot for exploring the area after your tour.
A guide from the distinguished Hara family—one of Kurashiki’s notable merchant families—will share the city’s history, from the era when samurai lived here to the founding of Kurashiki Spinning Company. You will hear authentic stories passed down through generations, offering insights into the real Kurashiki that cannot be found on the internet or in guidebooks.
As you explore the facility, you will learn how the textile industry enriched Kurashiki and how the legacy of cotton continues to shape the city’s culture and daily life today. Your guide will provide explanations throughout the tour to deepen your understanding of this unique heritage.
Originally a clinic and traditional family home, this property has been renovated and now operates as an inn featuring restored kura storehouses. Although it normally functions as accommodation, this tour offers a special opportunity to explore the entire 45-meter-long residence through a private room tour guided by Mr. Tsuji, the owner of Tsuchiya Residence and an active contributor to Kurashiki’s community development. Experience the thoughtful details woven into the design—such as the height and warmth of the lighting, the craftsmanship of the windows and ceiling, the carefully framed views from each chair, and the tatami edges creatively made with denim. Through these elements, you will feel Mr. Tsuji’s deep dedication to blending his home into the streetscape and his love for the local community.
