Departing from Moshi, a scenic 1-hour drive takes you through the charming Village of Marangu to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. There, amidst the hustle and bustle of preparations, permits are patiently issued for the upcoming journey. As crews gear up, the trail winds through the stunning rainforest, offering captivating scenery and insights into local flora, fauna, and natural wildlife. Navigating through this lush terrain, be prepared for muddy and slippery conditions at the lower elevations, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended for a safe and enjoyable trek.
As the elevation rises from 2740m/9000ft to 3690m/12,100ft, the Marangu Route unveils a second leg of its journey. After a restful night's sleep and a nourishing breakfast, the trek advances beyond the rainforest, ascending through a heathland adorned with giant lobelias and groundsels. The path unfolds amidst open moorlands, where small shrubs dominate the landscape. A pause for lunch at a scenic vantage point offers breathtaking views of Mawenzi. Continuing the ascent, the trail reaches the Horombo Huts in the late afternoon, nestled beneath the awe-inspiring Kibo Summit viewpoint. As temperatures begin to drop, the surroundings transform, setting the stage for an enchanting night on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ascending from 3690m/12,100ft to 4695m/15,400ft marks the next leg of the Marangu Route expedition. Following a hearty breakfast, the trail winds through diminishing heathland, gradually transitioning into a surreal moonscape as you enter the expansive saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. After pausing for a well-deserved lunch, you'll have the opportunity to survey the impending summit climb up Kibo. As you traverse this surprisingly vast saddle, the enormity of the summit challenge becomes palpable, setting the stage for the awe-inspiring journey ahead.
You'll ascend from 4695m/15,400ft to the breathtaking 5895m/19,340ft on the Marangu Route, followed by a descent to 3690m/12,100ft. Starting between midnight and 2:00 a.m., the summit push is mentally and physically demanding, navigating switchbacks through scree and snow toward Gillman’s Point. A brief rest offers a view of a magnificent sunrise, possibly seen from the summit. The final hour to Uhuru Peak involves a snowy ascent, marking the highest point on Kilimanjaro and the African continent. You'll descend steeply to Kibo for lunch and continue to Horombo Hut.
The final leg of the Marangu Route descent unfolds as you journey from 3690m/12,100ft to 1830m/6000ft. After a heartfelt breakfast and a ceremonial moment of appreciation and team bonding with your dedicated crew, it's time to bid farewell to the majestic slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The descent continues, with a stop at Mandara Huts for lunch, providing a chance to express gratitude through tips to your guides, cooks, and porters, who have been instrumental in the success of your adventure. Returning to the Marangu Park Gate, you'll receive well-earned summit certificates as tokens of your remarkable achievement. As you descend through warmer weather, expect wet, muddy, and steep terrain, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended. At the gate, a vehicle awaits to transport you back to your hotel in Arusha. You'll indulge in a long shower, a hearty dinner, and joyous celebrations, reflecting on the triumphs of your unforgettable journey.
