Tote Bag Dyeing Workshop Using Traditional Technique in Kanazawa

1 hour 30 minutes (approximately)
Offered in: Japanese and 1 more

Kanazawa is famously known as the city of arts, and while you can find art workshops throughout Japan that you can easily participate in, it is rare to find one like yours that offers you a chance to truly experience Japan's traditional arts in the form of Katazome stencil dyeing, as well as an opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with the artisan who has dedicated their life to making it. Your translator will be there to ensure that the communication between you and the artist is as smooth as possible, and you will be able to bring home with you a tote bag that you make yourself!

What to expect

In this workshop, you will be getting your hands on making your very own tote bag using a traditional stencil dyeing technique called Katazome. The technique was first developed as an inexpensive way to dye kimonos and other textiles. It has since evolved into a respected art form in its own right, and is well known for allowing versatility and a great amount of artistic expression.
While doing so, you will get a chance to have a meaningful conversation with an artist who is dedicating her life to pursuing art here in Kanazawa.

Overall process of the workshop is as follows:

1. Design, draw, and cut your own paper stencils (called Katagami in Japanese)

2. With the stencils you made and colored sponges, create your very own handbag. You are encouraged to let your imagination run wild in this workshop!

※Please note that it will take at least one day for the artist to add the finishing touches to your work, so we kindly ask that you participate at least one week before you leave Japan to allow us enough time to ship your work for you.
