After registration at Londorossi Gate, continue by vehicle to the Lemosho trailhead. Begin walking through Kilimanjaro’s dense rainforest, where blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys may occasionally be seen. The trail climbs gradually beneath tall trees and can become muddy after rainfall. Your guide will establish a slow, comfortable pace to help you conserve energy. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp in the afternoon for dinner, a health check and your first night on the mountain.
Leave the rainforest and climb through heathland towards the Shira Ridge. As the vegetation becomes shorter, wide views open across the surrounding plains. On a clear day, Kibo appears ahead while Mount Meru can be seen in the distance. After reaching the ridge, descend gently onto the western side of the Shira Plateau. Continue across the open moorland to Shira 1 Camp, where you will have dinner, complete a health check and receive a briefing about the next day.
Cross the Shira Plateau at a comfortable pace while enjoying open views of Kibo and the surrounding landscape. Depending on the weather and the group’s condition, your guide may include a walk near Shira Cathedral, a striking volcanic rock formation. Continue towards Shira 2 Camp, where you will have lunch and time to rest. A short afternoon acclimatization walk may be arranged before returning to camp for dinner. Temperatures fall quickly after sunset, so warm clothing will be necessary.
Climb gradually through the alpine desert towards Lava Tower at 4,600 metres. Reaching this elevation supports acclimatization before descending to sleep lower. After lunch near Lava Tower, follow the descending trail into Barranco Valley, passing volcanic formations and giant groundsels. Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the impressive Barranco Wall. The camp offers excellent views of Kibo and the southern glaciers when conditions are clear. Your guide will conduct an evening health check before dinner and explain the next day’s climb.
Begin by climbing the Barranco Wall, using your hands for balance where necessary. From the top, cross a series of ridges and valleys before descending into Karanga Valley. After a meal stop near Karanga Camp, continue through the rocky alpine desert to Barafu Camp. Prepare your summit clothing, headlamp, water and snacks before attending the guide’s final briefing. Have an early dinner and rest inside your tent. The summit attempt normally begins around midnight.
Begin climbing around midnight, following a steep volcanic trail towards Stella Point at 5,756 metres. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After photographs and a brief celebration, descend to Barafu Camp for food and rest. Continue downhill through alpine terrain and moorland to Mweka Camp. This is the expedition’s longest and most demanding day. The increasing oxygen and warmer temperatures at lower elevations usually make the final section more comfortable.
After breakfast, complete the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest. The trail may be wet and slippery, so walk carefully and use trekking poles when necessary. At Mweka Gate, sign out of the national park and receive your climbing certificate. Climbers reaching Stella Point receive a green certificate, while those reaching Uhuru Peak receive a gold certificate. After thanking the mountain crew, transfer back to your hotel for a shower, rest and celebration of your Kilimanjaro expedition.
