Walking past a few settlement areas, Monjo arrives. From here onwards, we begin trekking through the Sagarmatha National Park. Magnolia and rhododendron forests make the trail enchanting. Passing by lovely waterfalls and walking alongside verdant foothills, we steeply ascend to Namche Bazaar.
Namche Bazaar is one of the modern stations in the Khumbu region. This place is equipped with many modern hotels, restaurants and tea houses. Normally travellers stay one more day to adapt with high altitude.
We'll take a rest day in Namche Bazaar today. Because of the rise in altitude in the last two days, it's crucial to take acclimatization days to ensure a safe journey. Early in the morning, go on a hike to Syangboche Airstrip and Everest View Hotel. The mountain views of Thamserku, Kongde Ri, and Khumbila are outstanding along the way. We also get to see stunning views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, etc, too, during this hike. The remaining afternoon spends visiting museums and shops in Namche Bazaar.
The trail ascends to Tengboche village, following a very impressive trail. The route initially descends to Dudh Kosi Valley, and we reach Phungi Thanka. From here, we walk past the Imja Khola and keep ascending towards Tengboche. The views of Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Everest, and Mt. Nuptse, especially, are gorgeous on this day.
Early in the morning, we take our time to explore the Tengboche monastery. After breakfast, we leave Tengboche village and descend to the Imja River. Trekking through Pangboche village, we walk past fluttering prayer flags and stupas. Further, it's an uphill climb via terraces to Dingboche village, which is also known as the Summer Valley.
After acclimating for the first time at Namche, we will have a rest day today. Adapting to the increasing altitude and changing environment is essential for the human body to prevent altitude sickness. Today we acclimate by making a hike to Nangkartsang Peak. The view of Ama Dablam from the peak is awe-inspiring. After the acclimatization hike, you can explore the village or relax in the teahouse.
With every new village, we get very close to the Everest base camp. Leaving Dingboche village, we gently trek via bare fields. The trail gradually gets steep, and we hike to Dughla, following the glacial route. From here, the trail goes along the Khumbu glacier to Lobuche village.
The walk today finally takes us to Everest base camp. From Lobuche, the trail ascends steeply along the Khumbu glacier. We reach Gorka Shep, which used to be the base camp of Mt. Everest back in the day. Walking past memorial chortens, we walk on a boulders-filled area and gradually make it to Everest base camp. Surrounded by mountains and hills, the base camp is beautiful. After spending some time here, we will trek back to Gorak Shep to spend the night.
To enjoy the nearest view of Mount Everest, we hike to Kala Patthar, before the sunrises. Located above Gorak Shep, Kala Patthar is a famous vantage point that offers a breathtaking mountain panorama. From this place, you can see the ocean of mountains all around you. Later, following a downhill trail, it's a few hours to descend to Pheriche village.
After a hearty breakfast, we move down to Namche, hiking along the trail we had taken earlier. As the trek progresses, we come across Pangboche village, following Tengboche village. We cross a suspension bridge and enter the forest trail hiking until we arrive in Namche Bazaar.
Leaving Namche Bazaar, first steeply descend for some time following a trodden hillside. The trail then joins a densely forested path and goes through small settlements. Crossing Dudh Koshi River multiple times on suspension bridges, we reach Monjo and retrace the path back to Phakding village. From here, the trail gradually ascends to Lukla, where the trek ends.
