Offered in: English

One of Nepal’s most picturesque locations, the Langtang Valley trek was once a favorite place among trekkers who were looking for breathtaking scenery, authentic culture, and warm hospitality in charming homestay guest houses. However, due to the Langtang residents’ ongoing efforts to rebuild their lives after the April 2015 earthquake, the Langtang Valley is essentially empty these days. Survivors of the earthquake-caused landslides were forced to flee the valley, but they have returned to reclaim their homeland, rebuild their homes, and re-establish their farms.

Early departure from Kathmandu is advised for the seven-hour drive to the Langtang Valley. Before ascending to Dunche and the Langtang National Park, we pass through the busy town of Trisuli. It takes another hour to descend the hill from the town of Dunche to Syabru Besi (Alt. 1,460 m/4,790 ft), where your accommodation for the night is located.

The steep ascent through the forest to the Lama Hotel (Alt. 2,470 m/8,103 ft) is rewarded with a cozy lodge and a comfortable bed in the small town. Overnight and dinner at the Lama Hotel after around 6 hours of trekking

  • Day 5

Trek to Mundu from Lama Hotel

    1 stop
  • 5

The trail leaves the forest at Ghora Tabela (Alt. 3,000 m/9,842 ft), where mountains loom on either side of the valley. The path continues to gently ascend, and the valley widens as it passes a few temporary towns inhabited by herders who bring their livestock to graze in the summertime high pastures. If you haven't seen one already, you'll probably see your first yak soon. The trail's next section serves as a somber reminder of the 2015 quake. There is now only a vast rock field where Langtang village once stood, along with numerous lodges. Remember that your visit will aid in providing support for the survivors and spare a thought for the tourists and Nepalis who lost their lives here. Just another 30 minutes of walking will bring you to Mundu (Alt. 3,550m/11,646ft). The old homes in this area serve as a reminder of how the villages in this valley used to appear. As of today, most of the guestrooms and houses in this area are constructed in a more modern cultural manner.

  • Day 6

    Trek to Kyangjin Gompa

    1 stop

Today’s trail ends at Kyangjin (Alt. 3,800m/12,467 ft) after crossing several minor streams and moraines. There is a small monastery nearby, as well as a cheese factory run by the government that is a great place to get supplies for lunch and afternoon snacks. Since you'll be there by lunch, you have the afternoon free to relax or go exploring. If you have the energy, you can ascend the valley toward Langshisha Kharka to see some of the breathtaking views.
