Reindeer herding is among the oldest professions held by the native people of Lapland and much of their way of life perseveres today. The best way to meet the locals in Lapland is to meet a reindeer—they outnumber the humans! Reindeer have been the staple animal in Lapland for thousands of years, a primary means of transportation, milk, and meat. Reindeer herding began with the nomadic indigenous people of Lapland, the Sami, who lived in reindeer herding communities. Finnish settlers later learned the practice and it remains as central point of local culture. Our guests have the chance to meet the reindeer farmers themselves. Kids (and grown-ups) will enjoy the chance to feed the reindeer some tasty lichen, their favorite treat. Indoors you can enjoy something hot to drink and Finnish pulla (buns).
For photograph enthusiasts, there are many ideal photo opportunities.
After meeting and greeting the reindeer we’ll embark on a pleasant sleigh ride through the amazing landscape.
