When one thinks of Mexican traditions, one of the first images that pop into people’s minds is the incredible celebration of the Diá de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The costumes, the dancing, the music, and the remembrance all culminated in a celebration for those who have passed before us.
Get ready for a unique and behind-the-scenes journey to Michoacan, where the Diá de los Muertos celebration originated. We will follow in the footsteps of the movie "COCO", learn about traditions from local families and artists, and spend this sacred night on the island surrounded by thousands of candles and marigold flowers - an experience that you will never forget.
Tour starts on October 30th, early morning. We booked the night before the beginning of the tour for you, so that we could pick up the whole group from one spot.
The morning will start with a stroll in the Morelia city center, named by UNESCO a Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Along the way, we’ll enjoy and learn about local food, traditions, and history. Then we will have lunch in the restaurant that is also a mezcal distillery! Next, we are putting on makeup and dressing in Day of the Dead style and go for a Golden Hour photoshoot in the coastal fields of marigolds. We’ll end the day with dinner in Morelia in the most Day of the Dead style decorated restaurant.

Get ready for a busy day! We will learn about La Catrina and the art of doll crafting. We will have lunch in Quiroga, sampling local food consisting of the best carnitas you’ve ever had. Next, we are off to the house of Grandma Coco to explore, enjoying the beauty of the small towns decorated with bright marigolds along the way. We will interact with and see how the locals prepare for the celebration. In the evening, we will watch the sunset with a glass of Champagne from a stunning viewpoint. A five-course tasting menu awaits you to enjoy at the top restaurant in Pátzcuaro. Sleep well tonight; tomorrow is a big day!

After breakfast, we’ll wander through ancient cobblestone paths of Patzcuaro town, uncovering secrets of Purepecha traditions and tales that have been passed down through generations. seeing how locals celebrate this glorious day. As midday arrives, we’ll take a break and savor a delicious lunch with breathtaking views of Lake Pátzcuaro. Afterward, you’ll have some free time to wander at your own pace. Soak up the city’s festive atmosphere, join in the local celebrations, or simply relax and prepare for the unforgettable night ahead.
As midnight approaches, our adventure takes an incredible turn. We'll gather and make our way to several cemeteries around Pátzcuaro, where the real magic of Día de los Muertos comes to life. Witness how families lovingly decorate the graves of their ancestors with candles, flowers, and offerings, celebrating life and honoring those who have passed. Then, we’ll embark on a boat ride across the mystical waters to Janitzio Island. Here, we’ll visit the final cemetery, watching the quiet reverence of families gathered to honor their loved ones. We’ll stay on the island until the first light of dawn, witnessing an unforgettable sunrise – a truly magical moment that you’ll carry with you forever.
Free time to explore, sleep or take it easy in the morning after sleepless night. Take your time to relax, reflect, and perhaps relive the unforgettable moments from the night before. Check out in the late morning to give everyone a chance to sleep in. We’ll gather for lunch at the home of a local family, where the family’s chef will prepare a traditional meal just for us. Served on a terrace surrounded by nature, this lunch is more than a meal; it’s an experience. After lunch, we’ll head to a town renowned for its copper crafts. We’ll return to Morelia around 5pm - 6pm. For those who wish to prolong the magic, we’ll gather for a farewell dinner – a chance to share stories, laugh, and celebrate the unforgettable memories we've created together.
