Your journey starts with a drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate. After signing in and getting a quick briefing, you’ll begin your walk through a thick rainforest. The trail is surrounded by green trees, and you might even see some animals along the way. You’ll hike for about 5 to 7 hours, covering around 11 km (7 miles), before reaching Machame Camp, which is 3,010 meters (9,875 feet) above sea level.
On the second day, the trail gets steeper as you leave the rainforest and move into the moorland zone. The scenery changes a lot, with amazing views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. You will walk for about 4-6 hours, covering 5 km (3 miles), and arrive at Shira Camp, which is 3,840 meters (12,600 feet) above sea level.
This day is very important to help your body get used to the high altitude. You will hike up to Lava Tower, which is 4,630 meters (15,190 feet) high, where you will have lunch and rest. After that, you will go down to Barranco Camp, which is at 3,960 meters (13,000 feet). The hike is about 10 km (6 miles) and takes 6-8 hours. Going down to Barranco Camp helps your body adjust to the altitude and makes it easier for you to keep climbing.
You begin the day by climbing the Barranco Wall, which is steep but safe and does not need any special climbing skills. Once you reach the top, you’ll enjoy amazing views of the surrounding landscape. After the climb, the trail leads through a dry, open area to Karanga Camp, which is 4,035 meters (13,250 feet) above sea level. The hike is about 5 km (3 miles) and takes 4 to 5 hours.
The hike to Barafu Camp is short but steep, as you climb higher. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to walk 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) through the rocky alpine desert. Barafu Camp is at 4,640 meters (15,220 feet) and is where you prepare for the big climb to the summit. After an early dinner, you’ll rest and get ready for the final challenge.
You will start your climb to the top around midnight. This is the hardest part of the trek because it’s steep and the ground is loose. After 7-8 hours of walking, you will reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Here, you can celebrate your amazing achievement. After spending some time at the summit, you will head back down to Barafu Camp for a short rest. Then, you will continue descending to Mweka Camp, which is at 3,110 meters (10,200 feet). The total distance you will cover for the day is about 17 km (11 miles), and it will take 12-15 hours in total.
On the final day, you will walk down through the beautiful rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail is green and full of life, and you might see some animals along the way. The walk takes about 3-4 hours and is 10 km (6 miles) long. At Mweka Gate, you will get your summit certificate. After that, we will drive you back to Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate your amazing achievement!
