Discover the Kawarau Gorge Trail, on this spectacular self-guided eBike experience connecting the magnificent wine regions of Gibbston to those in Bannockburn.

The 39km route travels alongside the stunning Kawarau River, showcasing beautiful rocky outcrops, historic gold mining settlements, venturing through previously inaccessible terrain before joining up to the Lake Dunstan Trail in Bannockburn, for a leisurely ride around the inlet to the Kiwi Journeys depot in Cromwell.

The trail has largely been sculpted through the backcountry, therefore it is important that riders are up to the challenge of cycling in an unsupported manner for 32km.

Start your tour from the Kiwi Journeys depot in Gibbston, or connect by our shuttle from Arrowtown or Queenstown.

Shuttle connections are available from Arrowtown and Queenstown. Select the relevant option that suits you. For departures from Kiwi Journeys Gibbston, meet at the depot located at Mt Rosa Wines, 47 Gibbston Back Road, Gibbston - just near the start of the Kawarau Gorge Trail.

    This tour departs from Kiwi Journeys Gibbston at Mt Rosa Wines, where the western trail head of the Kawarau Gorge Trail is located. From the depot, navigate along the trail towards the Nevis, winding high above the Kawarau River.

    Kawarau River

    The trail winds along the Kawarau River, traversing bluffs, crossing above the river on clip-on bridges, meandering along paths that have been built and shaped to sit naturally within the challenging terrain.

    An optional visit to the Goldfields Mining Centre showcases the history of the gold mining era, the historic gold miners cottages, and interesting lessons in gold and precious metals!

    The eastern trail head of the Kawarau Gorge Trail traverses through the well known wine region of Bannockburn. Spend some time exploring the wineries and learning about the magnificent vintages produced here, before following the trail along the Bannockburn Inlet and past the Cromwell Heritage Precinct to the Kiwi Journeys Cromwell depot.
