Hola! I’m Alvaro, and together we’ll embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of mezcal.
Our adventure begins as we head to my picturesque hometown of Mitla, surrounded by beautiful mountains and endless agave fields.
For my family and me, mezcal is more than just a drink — it’s part of our identity, our culture, and our way of life.
Driven by my passion to share our Zapotec traditions, we’ll walk through the agave fields, learning how each variety contributes to the unique flavors and aromas of mezcal. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking landscapes, capture incredible photos, and share plenty of laughs.
Next, we’ll visit my family’s artisanal distillery, where I’ll guide you through every step of the traditional production process — from roasting the agave in an underground stone oven to the final distillation. You’ll feel the dedication and love that goes into every drop.
We’ll finish our experience with a tasting of different mezcal varieties, paired with a delicious, authentic Oaxacan meal prepared with local ingredients.
Throughout the tour, I’ll be by your side, making sure you feel at home.
My goal is to make your journey into the world of mezcal not just a tour — but a memory you’ll cherish forever.
Please go to the main entrance of the church. I will be happy welcome you there!
Once we meet, we will begin with a brief explanation about the day ahead and toast a good Mezcal to start the journey towards Teotitlan del Valle.
We will begin the journey full of mountainous landscapes until we reach Santa María Teotitlán del Valle, a craft town full of tradition, where we will visit a workshop of dyeing and weaving wool to know up close the ancestral technique of Zapotec dyeing
Travel through the agave fields: Once we arrive in the village we will start the tour walking through the agave fields, where the robust plants stand as guardians of the Oaxacan heritage, in a landscape surrounded by mountains, cacti and agaves, we will immerse ourselves in its history, understanding its transformation from the embrace of the earth to the nectar that adorns your cup. The pictures can't be missing.
Revealing Traditions Our journey continues at the doors of my family’s mezcal distillery, where the air is rich with the sweet aroma of roasted agave — a promise of the treasures that await inside. Guided by me and our maestro mezcalero, you’ll step back in time to witness the ancient process that transforms the humble agave hearts into the liquid gold known as mezcal. The highlight of our experience comes with a tasting of our finest mezcals, each one with its own character, story, and soul. As you raise your glass, the velvety spirit dances on your tongue, revealing flavors that range from earthy and smoky to delicate and floral. With my guidance, you’ll learn to recognize the subtle nuances in every sip — a journey that awakens your senses and deepens your appreciation for this remarkable elixir.
Taking a Piece of Oaxaca Home As the day comes to an end, you’ll have the chance to take a piece of Oaxaca’s magic home with you. Choose from our curated selection of artisanal mezcals, each one carefully crafted to capture the essence of our land. Every bottle carries a part of the story you’ve lived today — a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and the deep connection between the earth and this sacred spirit.
Oaxacan Feast & Friendship In the warmth of my family’s home, an authentic Oaxacan feast awaits. The table overflows with traditional dishes — each one carrying the flavors and stories of our heritage. As we gather to share food, laughter, and mezcal, bottles are uncorked and friendships are born in the joyful spirit of celebration. Here, cultures meet and connect, turning every toast into a living tribute to the magic of mezcal and the soul of Oaxaca.
Until We Meet Again As we make our way back to the meeting point, we carry with us memories that will forever flavor our hearts. The bonds we’ve formed, the flavors we’ve tasted, and the stories we’ve shared will continue to connect us long after the warmth of the mezcal fades. The drive from our meeting point to Mitla takes about 45 minutes, and the same for the return trip. Thank you for sharing the liquid culture of Mexico with us — until we meet again!
