What to expect

Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi is aiming at reviving the traditions of lacquerware by collaborating with various Kyoto artists, stores and brands, and creating a unique mix of traditional values and modern-day uses. You can enjoy the thin, light and elegant bowl during your lunch at Bukkoji Temple's "D&Department" restaurant. The adjacent shop also offers a variety of local craft products.
During the factory tour you will see some of the well-kept secrets of refining and coloring lacquer for the needs of local craftsmen. Following the factory tour you will visit the workshop area at the top floor and apply lacquer on a pair of chopsticks using the traditional "fuki-urushi" technique. You will take them with you as a present before visiting the nearby Bukkoji Temple and marvel at its lacquer-covered main hall. At the temple's precinct is "D&Department" store and restaurant where you will enjoy a classic lunch set with Kyoto ingredients served using lacquerware. This tour is a short journey to discover the ways in which Kyoto's classical culture and traditional crafts intersect and complement each other.
