The South African Native National Congress was founded 112 years ago on January 8, 1912, during a meeting in Bloemfontein by notable Black individuals from all around the country, including businesses, chieftains, preachers, professors, and professionals. It would change its name to the African National Congress, or ANC, a century ago, in 1923. The organization's goals were to advocate for Black residents' equal treatment under the law and to demonstrate against racial injustice. Pixley ka Isaka Seme, Sol Plaatje, John Dube, and Walter Rubusana were among the founding members. Reflecting on the journey, Mandela recognizes this collective effort as Long March for Freedom: The Long March to Freedom, a monumental procession of 100 life-size bronze statues and the largest exhibition of its kind anywhere in the world, opens to the public at Century City, Cape Town, on 15 November 2019.
