Offered in: English

What sets this experience apart is its focus on real Japanese home cooking, rather than restaurant-style or overly complex recipes.

Instead of spending hours preparing everything from scratch, this class is designed around how locals actually cook at home—efficient, practical, and full of flavor.

By making takoyaki, gyoza, and ramen in one session, you get to experience three iconic Japanese dishes in a short, well-paced 2–2.5 hour class without feeling rushed.

The small-group setting (maximum 6 participants) creates a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where you can truly engage with the instructors and other guests.

With local guides supporting the class, you receive personal attention, clear explanations, and a safe cooking environment. Located in central Kyoto near Shijo–Karasuma, this experience feels less like a tourist attraction and more like being invited into a local kitchen—sharing food, culture, and conversation the Japanese way.

What to expect

Get a hands-on and tasty introduction to Japanese home-style cooking in this small-group class, where you’ll learn how to prepare some of Japan’s most loved dishes. For those who want to elevate the experience, an optional beer and sake tasting is also available.

The experience begins in the morning in central Kyoto, where you’ll meet your instructor before heading to a cozy cooking studio. You’ll start by making miso soup, learning how small adjustments in technique and seasoning can completely change the final flavor.

Next, you’ll cook takoyaki—crispy, golden balls made from wheat flour batter and filled with octopus—followed by okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake made with egg, flour, cabbage, pork, and bonito flakes.

After cooking, sit down to enjoy the dishes you’ve prepared together with the group. You can choose to pair your meal with sake and beer, or simply relax and savor the food at your own pace. To finish the experience, you’ll enjoy a traditional sweet mochi along with a cup of matcha tea.
