Kuari Pass is one of the oldest treks in India, dating back to the 1800s. Lord Curzon, who was the Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905, visited this route, hence the name "Lord Curzon Trail. One highlight is the breathtaking view of Nanda Devi, the highest peak in India within Indian borders. The trek starts with a drive to Dhak Village, just 12 kilometers from Joshimath. The path goes through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests, especially colorful in spring. Throughout the trek, your senses will be treated to stunning views of several prominent mountain peaks like Nanda Devi, Dronagiri Parbat, Hathi Parbat, Ghori Parbat and many more.
Before the journey, you’ll receive the driver and vehicle details. Once you arrive at the meeting point, our team will be there to assist and pick you up.
The distance from Dehradun to Joshimath is 284 kilometers, taking about 9 to 10 hours via NH7. We’ll leave Dehradun early in the morning to enjoy the beautiful drive. Along the way, we’ll see four of the five Panch Prayags, where rivers meet. First is Devprayag, where the Alaknanda meets the Bhagirathi to form the Ganga. Next is Rudraprayag (Alaknanda and Mandakini), followed by Karnaprayag (Alaknanda and Pindar), and finally Nandprayag (Alaknanda and Nandakini). These rivers enhance our journey. We’ll spend the night in Joshimath to rest for the next day’s drive and hike. Tip: Arrive in Rishikesh a day early to avoid delays and explore the city.
Dhak Village is 12 km from Joshimath, and it takes about 45 minutes to drive there. After this short drive, our trek begins toward Gulling, passing through Dhak/Tugasi Village, our first campsite. The trail to Gulling is lined with oak, maple, pine, and walnut trees, giving you a chance to enjoy fresh nuts right from the tree. Gulling is a open area with stunning views of snow-covered mountain peaks, including Mt. Dronagiri. After our hike, we can stretch and enjoy a delicious lunch to relax after a great day.
After a tasty breakfast, we will start our hike to Khulara Top. The climb is a bit steep but not too tiring. The trail goes through a deep forest of oak, thunder, and cedar trees. Throughout the hike, you’ll see Mt. Dronagiri and other peaks nearby. There are small, clear streams along the way where you can drink water. Khulara Top offers a large camping area, like a small bugyal, with stunning views of the Himalayan peaks in the background, creating a beautiful scene for our adventure.
Today’s trek will be long but worth it. After a steep climb of 1.5 kilometers, you’ll walk on a ridge known as the “Lord Curzon Trail.” We’ll continue along this ridge, which leads us to Kuari Top. From here, you can see many beautiful peaks, including Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Chaukhamba, and Neekanth. After a short descent and a few kilometers, you’ll reach Kuari Pass. The trail is the same for both Kuari Top and Kuari Pass since they are at the same height. We’ll head back to our campsite at Khulara and rest well for the next day’s climb to the summit.
After a good rest, we will start our descent back to Joshimath using the same route, enjoying the scenery once more. It will take us about 5 to 6 hours to get back. From Dhak or Tugasi, we will take a taxi back to Joshimath, which is just a one-hour drive. Once we arrive, you can take a stroll around the town or relax and rest your muscles.
After breakfast, we will bid bye to Joshimath with a promise to return soon for another trek.
