Inebriated by the beauty of the top of Sameiro mountain, Fr Martinho thought of erecting a monument there to perpetuate the triumph of Mary Immaculate and the memory of the Dogmatic Definition of the Immaculate Conception. A pedestal was erected in 1863. A sculpture of the Immaculate Conception was placed on it, cut from a block of marble by the sculptor Emídio Carlos Amatucci. The first chapel was built and consecrated on 10 August 1877.

Located in the city of Braga, in the north of Portugal, the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary is built to the west and has wide views, sometimes to the ocean itself, over the entire city of Braga, the Bracara Augusta founded in Roman times from which it is historically inseparable. This cultural landscape evokes the Christian Jerusalem, recreating a sacred hill crowned by a church built between 1784 and 1811. The sanctuary illustrates a European tradition of creating Sacri Monti, including a series of chapels with sculptures evoking the Passion of Christ, as well as fountains, allegorical sculptures and formal gardens. The granite buildings have whitewashed stucco façades framed by exposed stonework. The famous Staircase of the Five Senses, with its walls, steps, fountains, statues and other ornamental elements, is the estate's most emblematic Baroque work.

Older than the Cathedral of Braga is a well-known Portuguese expression that reminds us of the antiquity of any given reality. It was the first Portuguese cathedral to be built. Even older than Portugal. Its walls support a monument with over 900 years of history and religious life. The Cathedral of Braga began to be built at the end of the 11th century and was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Pedro. Pedro and dedicated to the Virgin Mary on 28 August 1089. One of the most visited monuments in the city of Braga due to the historical, artistic, cultural and spiritual uniqueness of the old Cathedral.
