A fully private day from Tokyo to Hakone: your own fluent English-speaking guide, your own car, and nobody else on board. Your guide collects you at your hotel in the morning, walks the viewpoints and the shrine with you, and drives you back in the evening.
The day as we plan it: the Hakone Turnpike and its viewpoints, the Mt Taikan observation deck for Mt Fuji above Lake Ashi on a clear day, Hakone Shrine and its torii standing in the lake, then a Hakone hot spring we know well, with lunch at its own restaurant. Back in Tokyo around 18:30.
Prefer art to a bath? Swap the onsen for the Hakone Open-Air Museum or the Pola Museum of Art; Owakudani and Amazake Chaya, a 400-year-old teahouse, can be added if the day allows.
Tattoos are accepted at the onsen we use. Onsen entry, lunch and museum tickets are paid on the day. Pickup and drop-off at any hotel in Tokyo's 23 wards. The tour is private: only your party, your guide and the car.
We will pick you up at any hotel, Airbnb or train station within Tokyo's 23 wards. Upon booking, please include your pick-up location in the "Special Requirements" section. There may be an additional surcharge for pick-up at other sites.
The Hakone Turnpike, a toll road up the mountain, with three stops at viewpoints over Sagami Bay and the Izu Peninsula. Then the Mt Taikan observation deck: Mt Fuji above Lake Ashi on a clear day. If the deck is inside the cloud, we drive on.
Optional. If time and weather allow, a short stop on the shore of Lake Ashi for Mt Fuji and the torii together.
The cedar-lined approach, the shrine, and the red torii standing in Lake Ashi.
Optional. Amazake Chaya, a 400-year-old teahouse on the old Tokaido road. Ask and your guide builds the day around it.
Lunch at the onsen's own restaurant, at your own pace. Lunch is paid by you.
The onsen. A Hakone hot spring we know well: the baths, and a massage if one is free on the day. You bathe at your own pace; your guide meets you again in the late afternoon. Tattoos are accepted at the onsen we use. Onsen entry is paid by you.
Optional. Owakudani, the volcanic valley, if the day allows. Ask and your guide builds the day around it.
Optional. Prefer art to a bath? The onsen can be swapped for the Hakone Open-Air Museum, with its sculpture across the gardens. Museum tickets are paid by you.
Optional. Or swap the onsen for the Pola Museum of Art, in the beech forest of Sengokuhara. Museum tickets are paid by you.
