At the famous Hakodate Morning Market, you can experience the unique flavors and traditional customs of northern Japan. As a culinary hub of Hokkaido, the market offers specialties such as squid sashimi and rice bowls topped with fresh seafood. You might choose to visit early in the morning to soak up the lively atmosphere.
Travel from the Hakodate Station area to Goryokaku, the northernmost major stop on the route. Walk through the grounds of the star-shaped former fort and visit the Goryokaku Tower area. Guests may purchase a tower ticket to view the full star-shaped layout from above. Depending on the season, the park may feature cherry blossoms, summer greenery, autumn colors, or winter scenery.
Return toward Hakodate’s western waterfront and visit the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse district. Enjoy free time for shopping, cafés, harbor photographs, and a walk through the restored warehouse complex. The buildings now contain shops, restaurants, and cultural spaces while retaining the atmosphere of Hakodate’s historic port.
Continue uphill from the waterfront into Motomachi, a picturesque historic district where Hakodate’s Japanese and Western influences meet. Stroll along the famous Hachimanzaka Slope and enjoy its postcard-like view stretching downhill toward the harbor. Follow the gently sloping streets past some of Hakodate’s most distinctive landmarks, including the green-domed Hakodate Orthodox Church, the Catholic Motomachi Church, and Hakodate Episcopal Church. Continue toward the elegant Former Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, known for its striking blue-and-yellow exterior, while discovering former consulates, Western-style residences, and other historic buildings that reflect Hakodate’s past as one of Japan’s earliest international ports.
Finish the sightseeing portion of the tour at Mt. Hakodate. Depending on traffic restrictions, seasonal road closures, congestion, weather, and operating conditions, guests may reach the summit by ropeway, bus, taxi, or another permitted method. The recommended arrival time is around sunset or shortly afterward so guests may experience the changing view from daylight to dusk and the illuminated city.
