To find the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech, start from Jemaa el-Fna square and head southwest along Moulay Rachid Street. Continue until you reach the Koutoubia Gardens, then follow them west to arrive in front of the mosque.
Your adventure begins with an early departure from Marrakech.
Arrive in Imlil, the lively mountain hub where most Toubkal treks begin. Enjoy a traditional welcome drink, meet your local guide, and get your gear ready. From here, the real trekking adventure starts.
Continue on foot through terraced fields and mule tracks to Aremd, the largest and highest village in the Imlil Valley. With its stone houses clinging to the hillside, Aremd offers a glimpse into authentic Berber mountain life.
Hike up to this small but striking shrine, marked by a massive white boulder. It’s a local pilgrimage site and a natural resting point. Here you’ll break for lunch near a cascading mountain stream and take in the peaceful surroundings.
By late afternoon, you reach the refuge — the climbers’ base camp. The atmosphere is special here, with hikers from around the world sharing meals and preparing for the summit attempt. You’ll spend the night here, resting up for the big push.
While the actual climb to the summit happens the next morning, everything on Day 1 is about getting you closer to this goal. From the refuge, you can already look up at the mighty peak of Toubkal, your destination for sunrise tomorrow.
After the descent, enjoy a hearty mountain lunch back at the refuge. It’s the perfect chance to relax, share stories with other hikers, and take in the atmosphere
The trek winds down through the valleys until you return to Imlil, where your driver will be waiting for the journey back to Marrakech.
After completing your trek, you’ll head back by road to Marrakech. Travelers can be dropped off near the Koutoubia Mosque, right in the heart of the old city, or directly at their accommodation if arranged in advance.
