The Mount Meru hike is a hidden treasure for trekkers seeking raw beauty, fewer crowds, and a truly immersive wilderness experience. Rising to 4,566 meters, it’s Tanzania’s second-highest peak and a perfect acclimatization climb before Kilimanjaro. What makes it truly special is the journey—trekking through lush rainforest teeming with wildlife, crossing scenic ridges with panoramic views, and summiting at sunrise to a dramatic volcanic crater and a distant view of Kilimanjaro. With its quieter trails, diverse ecosystems, and rich encounters with nature, Mount Meru offers a soulful adventure for hikers who crave something off the beaten path.

Your trek begins at Momella Gate (1,500m), where you’ll register and start your ascent through lush montane forest. Keep an eye out for buffaloes, giraffes, and colobus monkeys as you hike. The trail climbs gently, crossing streams and offering scenic views of waterfalls and wildlife. After 4–5 hours of hiking, arrive at Miriakamba Hut for dinner and an overnight stay in the peaceful forest.
After breakfast, ascend through tall heather and open moorland, passing fig trees and enjoying panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is steeper today but rewarding. Look out for turacos, sunbirds, and other highland species. After 3–4 hours, you’ll reach Saddle Hut, nestled below Little Meru. In the afternoon, you can take a short acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for stunning sunset views.
Begin your summit push around midnight. Trek under the stars past Rhino Point (3,800m) and Cobra Point (4,350m), reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise. Enjoy sweeping views of the crater and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. After celebrating your summit, descend carefully to Saddle Hut for brunch, then continue back to Miriakamba Hut. This long but rewarding day ends with a warm meal and well-earned rest
After breakfast, descend via a different route through the forest and open grasslands, offering final glimpses of wildlife and Meru’s towering slopes.
