    Panjakent

    The border crossing takes around 40 minutes. At the Tajikistan side travelers will be met by Tajik guide and the driver with sign of their names and drive to Penjikent. Penjikent is northern Tajikistan’s main archaeological site. This rich, cosmopolitan place thrived on the banks of the Zarafshan River until destroyed by Arab invaders in 722. Silk cocoons were unearthed at the site during excavations. Sarazm is located 20 km west of Penjikent city and it is one of the oldest settlements in Central Asia, where archaeologists have unearthed a Bronze Age temple complex and 2,500-year-old grave of a wealthy woman.
