Monet's Garden Marmottan in Kochi Prefecture is a beautiful garden that faithfully recreates the gardens of French Impressionist master Claude Monet in Giverny, France—where he spent half his life and drew deep inspiration—within the natural setting of Kochi. It is the only place in the world officially authorized by the Claude Monet Foundation in France to use the name "Monet's Garden." Opened in 2000 under the guidance of Gilbert Vahé, the former head gardener of the original Giverny garden, it is not a mere copy but incorporates unique beauty enhanced by Kochi's climate, light, and surrounding mountains and sea. The facility is closed on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays from June to October, as well as from December 1 to the end of February. Therefore, we will either visit a different location on those days or choose an alternative destination instead of this one.
The Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden is a vast comprehensive botanical garden located on Mount Godaisan in Kochi City.Established in 1958, this garden was created to honor the achievements of Dr. Tomitaro Makino, widely regarded as the "Father of Japanese Plant Taxonomy." It features over 3,000 species of plants, primarily wild varieties, cultivated throughout the grounds. Many areas recreate the rich natural vegetation of Kochi (Tosa region), earning it recognition as the only comprehensive botanical garden in Shikoku built on a "natural ecosystem" foundation. It is cherished by locals and tourists alike as a place where visitors can experience the world of plants throughout the seasons.
