It is the largest Hachimangu shrine in Edo, and the “Fukagawa Hachiman Festival” held in August is one of the three major festivals in Edo. It is also the birthplace of Edo Kanshin Sumo, and there are many stone monuments related to sumo, including the Yokozuna Sumo Wrestler Monument.
Fukagawa Fudōdō is a historic temple located in the Fukagawa district of Tokyo. It is formally known as the Fukagawa Fudō-ji Temple, and it is a prominent Shingon Buddhist temple dedicated to Fudō Myōō (Acala), a wrathful deity who is believed to offer protection and remove obstacles. The temple has a long history dating back to the early Edo period (1603-1868). It was established in 1681 and has been an important spiritual center in the Fukagawa area for centuries.
The largest seated statue of King Enma in Japan is enshrined at Hojoin Temple, and the current statue of Enma was erected in 1989, the first statue of Enma in Japan to adopt a system in which visitors can listen to various sermons from the Buddha when they make a monetary donation in response to 9 prayers. The statue is famous for its special blessings to ward off and seal off evil, and is trusted by the general public as one of the three Enma statues of Edo.
The museum features a life-size reproduction of a town at the end of the Edo period (Tempo era), and visitors can enjoy a “hands-on” exhibition room where they can actually go up to stores and row houses and touch daily utensils, etc., as well as a scene of a changing day with sound and lighting.
