The start is near the Schapenbrug at the Waagplein
The Waagplein is perhaps the most famous place in Alkmaar. The cheese market has been held here since the year 1365. Every Friday it is very busy. But even without the cheese market, Waagplein is worth a visit, for example for the beautiful weighing house with its old tower
We walk past the iconic building of the beer museum, the largest and oldest beer brewery in Alkmaar. In this Beer Museum, which used to be the brewery, 33 different types of beer were brewed. Now it is open as a museum.
The Kooltuin has a beautiful small canal. It is a historic canal, because this used to be the garden of the monastery.
There was heavy fighting in Alkmaar during the Spanish occupation. The house with the bullet is actually a symbol of this battle. They say that when the Spaniards shot a bullet through this house, a table, a chair and a spinning wheel were immediately destroyed. But there was nothing wrong with the 7 residents!
We walk past the narrowest house in Alkmaar. This was a tax trick, because you paid tax on the width of your house.
We find nice shops here. You should definitely visit the Korpsla vegetable shop.
On the other side of the water you see benches, actually a kind of shelter. Now these are used for terraces or bicycle sheds, but in the past this was where De Visbanken where freshly caught fish was traded.
