The National Palace of Queluz enchants with its grandeur and the exuberance of its architectural details. Castelo dos Mouros

Isolated high up, on one of the peaks of the Sintra mountain range, the Castelo dos Mouros is a fortification founded in the 10th century, a time of Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Its famous walls snake through the mountains with their granite blocks between rocks and cliffs. Its roundabout path allows you to glimpse a unique landscape over the town, Pena and, further away, the contrast between the green of the mountains and the blue of the Atlantic. admission/entry fee: 12€

Park and National Palace of Pena

The Pena National Palace is like a sacred jewel that crowns the Serra de Sintra. The surrounding park, in tune with the palace's fairy-like character, awakens emotions of mystery and discovery. In its corners, the eyes are lost in charm. The colorful tones of the palace, the highest exponent of Romanticism in Portugal and the eternal work of D. Fernando II, King-Artist, open doors to the imagination of all who arrive there, and the infinite shades of green that paint the surrounding park constitute a setting idyllic, often under the veil of the characteristic fog of the Sintra mountains. As if straight out of a fairy tale, this place makes every generation of those who pass by and are dazzled by it dream. admission/entry fee: 20€

    Quinta da Regaleira

Sintra was, in the 19th century, one of the first cradles of romantic architecture in Europe. Its unique climate and consequent nature attracted the eyes of those who, touched by the landscape, dared to retouch it with stunning architecture in an Edenic harmony conducive to the contemplation of the beautiful and the sublime. It is in this picturesque setting that we find on the outskirts of the historic center of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira. Designed and built in the late 1800s, it reflects the sensitivity and cultural, philosophical and scientific interests of the main owner, António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), together with the virtuosity of the Italian architect and set designer Luigi Manini (1848-1936 ). The culture and creativity of these two personalities resulted in an eclectic-revivalist architectural ensemble, with a particular focus on Manueline, Renaissance, medieval and classical styles. admission/entry fee: 12€

Legend tells us that there once was a magical castle near the place. There lived a horrible sorcerer who wanted to marry the most beautiful young woman in the region. But, time and time again, she refused to love him. Then, trying to soften the young woman's heart, the sorcerer trapped her in a tower and placed a knight to guard the entrance. One day, driven by curiosity, this guard peeked into the cell, for the first time, falling in love with the maiden. This one also seems to have fallen in love with the one who was watching her at the time. Together, they decided to escape the tower and live their love. However, the sorcerer quickly learned of this common intention and using his evil magic caused a huge hole to sprout in the ground, where the two lovers would fall (to Hell?); At that moment, their horse even gave a huge screech, an action that gave its name to a relatively nearby beach - Praia do Guincho - where that final animalistic scream reached.
