You will cycle for one hour (18km) surrounded by ancient olive trees plantations and beautiful Masserias (Farm houses) till you arrive to the Town of Sternatia. Sternatia is one of the 11 towns that form an area called Grecia salentina. Grecìa Salentina is an area in near the town of Lecce which is inhabited by the Griko people, an ethnic Greek minority in southern Italy who speak Griko, a variant of Greek. The Greeks have been establishing settlements in Southern Italy from prehistoric times up to the Byzantine era. This mill as many others in the area was used for the production of Lamp oil. The Lamp oil was exported to the rest of Europe. All the big cities such as London, Amsterdam etc were illuminated by it. With the installation of gas light in the 19th century, the fast decline of the oil lamps started.
