Alaverdi St. George Cathedral (first half of the 11th century) is located 18 km from the town of Telavi in the Alazani-River valley. Earliest structures of Alaverdi Monastery date back to 6th century. The present day Cathedral is part of an 11th century Georgian Orthodox monastery. Alaverdi is the highest cathedral in Georgia (up to 50 meters).
Brothers, Gia and Gela Gamtkitsulashvili founded a unique museum of ''Qvevri and Qvevri Wine'' in 2014. The complex of the museum consists of 8 meters long pitcher statue and several halls, where the whole process of producing pitchers and making pitcher wine is described. The 15 years collection of wine from “Twins’ winery“, various archival photos and information about the species of Georgian grapes, pitchers, winepress of cellar are represented in the museum of pitcher and pitcher wine. The most important part of museum are 3 pitchers with volume of 500 liters, cut in the size of 1/3, which are covered with glass.
Batonis Tsikhe is translated as ‘The Master’s Fortress’, and it was built by King Archil in 1667-1675. It was the main residence of the Kakhetian kings in the 17th-18th centuries. The castle includes two old churches, the ruins of a royal bath and a palace of King Erekle II, that was built in the Persian style. The construction process of the architectural complex of Batonis Tsikhe was divided into two parts. Erekle II’s Palace, the eastern gate and a royal bath were constructed in 1667-1675, while the church of Erekle II, a fence and the western gate were built later, in the second half of the 18th century. According to the historical sources, the complex of Batonis Tsikhe was not only the residence of the Kakhetian Kings, but it also had very important military purposes. In particular, during the reign of King Erekle, a fence was protecting the city and its population from the invasions.
Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, the founder of the Georgian romanticism turned the estate in the village of Tsinandali, which he inherited from his father into cultural and intellectual center of the country, the status it preserves to this day. The place regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, literary events and master classes. The complex in Tsinandali embraces the memorial house, a landscape garden, a historical winery, wine cellar, hotel and a café. The vineyards have been restored and wine production has resumed. We offer you a pleasurable and informative experience: you will look into the background of the noble Chavchavadze family, who played a significant part in the national history; enjoy the views of the garden, have a look at the winery and sample the “Tsinandali” (first produced by the Chavchavadzes) etc. Georgian wines and round off the visit at the historical hotel.
Nekresi is an ancient monastic complex located on the top of a mountain in the Alazani Valley in Kakheti. Many centuries ago there was once the eponymous city of Nekresi, the ruins of which can be seen from the height of the monastery.
Winery Khareba owns an unique and rare wine cellar located in Kvareli, in the Alazani Valley. Carved inside the Caucasus mountains and opened in 1962 for the OIV World Congress, the cellar/tunnel is 7,7 kilometers long. The best wines of the Kakheti region have been stored and aged here for decades. The tunnel preserves a natural temperature of 12-14° Celcius with a humidity rate of 70%; the ideal conditions for wine preservation.
Signagi - the heart of Kiziqi which is the most picturesque corner of Kakheti, is lying on the South-Eastern slopes of Tsiv-Gombori range. The townlet is overlooking Alazani Valley from the height. Its elevation from the Valley is 400 m. The name of the town derives from Turkic word and means ‘shelter’, or, according to other historical sources, ‘invincible’.
