Tel Aviv is usually explained through architecture. This walk explains it through architecture and food together. We start at HaTachana, the 1892 railway station. Neve Tzedek, minutes away, was built in 1887, five years before the railway — you'll learn why by Shabazi Street. We pass the restored houses of Tel Aviv's first neighbourhood and the Suzanne Dellal Centre, then cross into a city built forty years later on different principles. Rothschild Boulevard holds roughly 4,000 International Style buildings, the largest concentration anywhere, inscribed by UNESCO in 2003. We continue down Nahalat Binyamin, laid out in 1909, to Carmel Market, founded in the 1920s. Taste fifty years of immigration: fresh malawach, sabich, burekas, cheeses and halva cut from the block. 4Carmel Market (Shuk Ha'Carmel)
Enter the market at Nahalat Binyamin St 1. Founded in the 1920s by residents of the neighbouring Yemenite Quarter, Carmel Market reflects decades of immigration in its produce. Stop for tastings at four points along the way: a bakery for freshly made malawach, a cheese and delicatessen stall, a street food stop for traditional sabich and Turkish burekas, and a sweets stall for halva cut from the block.
