Sommarøy is far from city lights, but sitting on the open coast means ocean clouds can roll in fast. Instead of waiting under cloudy coastal skies at your hotel, you have your own private heated 4x4 expedition van and local guide for up to 8 guests.

We stay in close contact to plan around your schedule. We pick you up from Sommarøy Arctic Hotel or any cabin within 15 km—or straight from Tromsø Airport or the cruise terminals if you arrive that evening, dropping you off in Sommarøy after the chase.

Instead of relying on city weather apps, your guide tracks live satellite cloud radar all evening, driving along coastal fjords or inland toward dry mountain valleys and the Finnish border to find clear skies. Our van stays warm inside even with the engine off, and we include -40°C thermal suits, hot drinks, a quiet campfire, and all your RAW and FREE WATERMARK photos.

We offer direct door-to-door pickup from Sommarøy Arctic Hotel and all cabins/accommodations across the Sommarøy and Kvaløya area.

Arriving in Tromsø on the day of your tour? You can also select pickup directly from Tromsø Airport (TOS) or the Tromsø Cruise Terminals (Prostneset & Breivika)—we will take you straight out on your private Northern Lights chase and drop you off directly at your hotel in Sommarøy (or back at your cruise ship) when the tour finishes.

We contact you on the afternoon of your tour via WhatsApp or SMS to confirm your exact pickup time and guide details. Please ensure the phone number on your booking includes your country code (+) and is reachable on tour day.

    Pickup & Live Weather Briefing Sommarøy or Tromsø Arrival (Private Pickup & Weather Plan) We pick up your group directly from Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, your local cabin across Sommarøy and Kvaløya, or straight from Tromsø Airport and the cruise terminals if you are arriving that evening. Once everyone is settled into the heated 4x4 Mercedes van, your guide checks live satellite cloud radar and wind maps with you to decide whether we stay out on the outer coast or drive inland to beat the clouds.

    The Private 4x4 Chase, Campfire & Photography Coastal Fjords & Inland Microclimates (The Chase, Photos & Campfire) Because this is a private 4x4 tour, you never follow big tour buses or wait in lines. If skies over Sommarøy and Kvaløya are clear, we use quiet coastal bays and mountain viewpoints right away. If coastal snow clouds roll in from the sea, we drive inland toward the dry mountain valleys or the Finnish border to find clear sky gaps. Along the route, we stop at heated indoor service stations for restroom breaks. Once under clear skies, we set up a private campfire, serve hot drinks and snacks, provide -40°C thermal suits, and take all your portraits and aurora photos—while the van stays heated with the engine off whenever you want to warm up inside.

    Safe Door-to-Door Drop-Off Sommarøy Hotel, Cabin, or Cruise Port (Direct Drop-Off) Once we have great photos and you are ready to wrap up the night, we drive your group safely back to the front door of Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, your private holiday cabin, or directly to your Tromsø hotel or cruise ship security gate. Your photos are sent to you in full RAW quality via a private cloud link within 24 hours.
