  Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre

  The Giraffe House near Stellenbosch is a well-kept, outdoor wildlife centre where the main highlight is meeting Gerry the giraffe. Visitors can usually feed him specially provided pellets, making for great photos and close interaction. Gerry is known for his gentle, inquisitive behaviour—he calmly leans down to inspect guests, flicks his long tongue toward treats, and spends much of the day browsing leaves or strolling around his enclosure. His habitat is designed to resemble a natural savanna environment, with wide open space, sandy ground, scattered shade trees, and elevated feeding platforms that encourage natural stretching and browsing behaviour. The layout allows guests to observe how giraffes move, feed, and interact with their surroundings. It also houses zebras, eland, springbok, ostriches, tortoises, birds of prey, and various reptiles. Educational talks take place several times a day, where staff introduce smaller animals and explain their habits and roles in the ecosystem

  Drakenstein Lion Park

  Drakenstein Lion Park is a peaceful, well-run big-cat sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and caring for lions that cannot be released into the wild. The park offers a relaxed, self-guided walking route past large, natural enclosures where visitors can observe the lions sunbathing, playing, or resting under trees. The focus is strongly ethical—no breeding, petting, or trading—making it a responsible alternative to typical animal attractions. A highlight for many visitors is the lion feeding on selected afternoons, where guests can watch the keepers interact safely with the animals and learn about each lion’s story and personality. Informative boards and friendly staff add to the educational experience.
