After breakfast, we leave Moshi at 10 AM, drive for 45 minutes to the Machame Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro, register with the national park, and begin hiking around noon after lunch at the gate. We will walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. We continue a short distance on the heather until we reach the Machame Camp. After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather until the ridge ends. The route now turns west onto a river gorge. Time for rest, dinner, and overnight at the Shira campsite. -Machame Camp to Shira Camp -Elevation: 2835m to 3750m -Distance: 5 km -Hicking time: 4-6 hours -Habitat: Moorland
Today is a good day for the body to acclimatize for the days to follow. You will climb roughly 700 m but will sleep on a level not much higher than the night before. We will start at Shira Plateau and make our way up to Lava Tower at around 4600 m, after lunch and a rest we will continue through the Barranco Valley until we reach our destination for the day the beautiful Barranco Camp. Today’s trek will be approximately 6 – 7 hours, during which time you will experience the alpine desert as well as the Barranco Valley with its small lobelia plants and giant senecio’s. You will sit down for a well-deserved dinner before it’s time to rest in preparation for the next day. -Shira Cave to Barranco Camp -Elevation: 3750m to 3900m -Distance: 10 km -Hicking time: 6-8 hours -Habitat: Semi Desert
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall. At Karanga Camp, we have a well-earned lunch break and enjoy fantastic views of Barafu and Mount Meru. We continue across the ridges and valleys to the Karanga Valley campsite. You will sit down for dinner before it’s time to rest in preparation for the next day. After breakfast, we leave Karanga and then we continue up to Barafu Hut. At this point, we have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare for the summit day. Summit Day - Part 1 Very early in the morning (midnight), we put on many layers of clothing and begin our climb to the summit. We head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point (5756m), we stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. From Stella Point, we have just one more hour before reaching the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Summit Day - Part 2 We now make our descent from the summit, continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. -Uhuru Peak to Mweka Hut -Elevation: 5895m to 3100m -Distance: 12 km -Hicking time: 5-6 hours -Habitat: Heath
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate. The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella’s Point (5756m) receive green certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. After signing, you will stop at the restaurant to share a last meal with all the team (it could also be the time to give tips to them) and then, you will drive back to the hotel in Moshi for long overdue showers and celebrations.
